Haku Mele: Dennis Kamakahi Multiple Grammy Winner, multiple Na Hoku Hanohano winner, and 2009 Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductee, Rev. Dennis D. K. Kamakahi. A former member of the legendary Hawaiian folk music group, the Sons of Hawaii (1974 - 1992), became well known during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970's for his music compositions and has written over 500 songs. Wahine 'Ilikea, Pua Hone, Koke'e, and E Hihiwai are some of the Hawaiian classic songs, sung and danced to today, were written by him. Come listen to this legendary composer about the art of Haku Mele. |

Lee Ritenour From rock to blues to jazz, his diverse music became the foundation of over 3,000 sessions as a young guitarist with a broad spectrum of artists such as Pink Floyd (The Wall), Steely Dan (Aja), Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Not to forget the dazzling array of talent appearing on his solo works and collaborations, notably-- Phil Collins, Brazilian greats Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Djavan and Jao Bosco, George Benson, Chaka Kahn, Herbie Hancock, Michael McDonald and opera great Renee Fleming. This guitar workshop is sure to be a highlight of the festival. |

Meet the Artist: Jake Shimabukuro & Eddie Kamae
Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake views the ukulele as an "untapped source of music with unlimited potential." His virtuosity defies label or category and his mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of more than traditional Hawaiian music. Eddie Kamae is an 'ukulele virtuoso, singer and composer. He is known as a primary proponent of the 'Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance. After learning to play on a found 'ukulele in his teens, he gained fame in Hawai'i with such groups as 'Ukulele Rascals and Ray Kinney's Orchestra. With famous slackkey guitarist Gabby Pahinui, he later founded Sons of Hawai'i the legendary Hawaiian band. Eddie originated unique plucking techniques and forever changed the method of playing the 'ukulele. He helped make the 'ukulele a solo and lead instrument rather than an anonymous member of the rhythm section. He was also inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. Come meet Jake Shimabukuro with special guest Eddie Kamae in a Meet the Artist session. Jake will take questions and share how Eddie Kamae was a life inspiration to him. |

Meet the Artist: John Cruz
Hawaii Magazine named John Cruz, one of Hawai'i's most talented artists, the Best Singer Songwriter in 2008. He hails from a musical family, but found his own voice in 1983 after moving to the East Coast where he performed widely. John returned home and in 1996 released Acoustic Soul. With songs 'Island Style,' 'Shine On' and 'Sitting in Limbo' it was a huge hit and solidified his songwriting credentials. It was awarded the Nä Hökü Hanohano Contemporary Album of the Year and John was named that year's Most Promising Artist. One of These Days followed in 2007, again winning the Contemporary Album of the Year Award. With Phish frontman Trey Anastasio John cowrote 'A Case of Ice and Snow,' which appeared on Anastasio' second solo CD. Surfing champ Kelly Slater features John's songs on his DVD, and Jack Johnson has recorded 'Island Style' and performs it live regularly. Come meet the awardwinning singer/songwriter in this Meet the Artist session. |

Making A CD III Attention to Details: Jerry Brocklehurst
Whether you're an artist or a producer, your material must be presented in the best possible light. Small details can make the difference between lackluster or dazzling. This could include anything from noise, too much / too little compression, to tired or weak performances. This workshop will provide examples of what to listen for and how to produce the best sounding recordings possible. The dazzle's not there if it's not in the details. Jerry Brocklehurst is a Nä Hökü-nominated producer, with many years of recording and engineering experience. He maintains a vast network of music industry contacts throughout Hawai'i, in Los Angeles, Nashville, and New York. He is President of New Boomer Music (record label / recording studio), President of the Kauai Music Festival, the annual 4-day event focused on songwriting, and is General Manager of KKCR Kauai Community Radio. Jerry is a member of HARA, the Recording Academy, and Board member of Garden Island Arts Council, which promotes concerts including the annual E Kanikapila Kakou series. Throughout that time he has been professionally involved in Hawaii’s recording industry and the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts, where he served as an original director and incorporator. His experience in the industry extends to international music licensing both for film and commercial use; the prosecution and defense of copyright and trademark infringement claims; and the negotiation of artist recording agreements both on behalf of artists and record companies. Bass Workshop: Melvin Davis Los Angeles native Melvin Lee Davis was discovered at the tender age of 16 by Buddy Miles, when a horn player from Buddy Miles' band heard Melvin playing in a local club. Buddy Miles flew Davis to New York to audition for his band and immediately hired him. After playing the New York club circuit, Melvin found himself working with Don Cornelius of Soul Train. He has toured and recorded with Chaka Khan, the Pointer Sisters, Lee Ritenour, Bryan Ferry, David Benoit, Larry Carlton, Patti Austin, Gladys Knight, and many other top acts. Davis wrote the theme for the TV show "The Party Machine" and "Soul Train's A Coming" and has appeared on "Johnny Carson", "David Letterman", "Jay Leno", and "Arsenio Hall." Melvin has travelled the world and continues to be in high demand across many genres of music because of his incredible talent and positive demeanor on and off stage. Reggae: Cas Haley
Cas Haley has spent his life developing a truly original sound combining classic influences from Bob Wills to Bob Marley with a soulful voice and prolific songwriting. Over the last 7 years with his band Woodbelly his style has evolved and incorporates a solid funky rhythm section with addictive hooks, vocal displays captivating a growing legion of fans and fellow musicians. They have played hundreds of shows from California to New York sharing the stage with luminaries UB40, Burning Spear, Al Green, Los Lonely Boys, Blues Traveler, Soulive, Mofro, Jah Roots and many more. In the summer of 2007, Cas took an unusual opportunity to appear on NBC's hit show America's Got Talent and took the national audience by storm performing Sting's 'Walking on the Moon.' With each appearance Cas gained notoriety and finished as a runnerup. Thereupon he released his selftitled independent album in February 2008, it has remained a top reggae album on iTunes and rose to #8 on the Billboard top selling reggae albums of the year. Cas is set to release Connection in Spring 2010. Cas Haley will give a Workshop on Reggae Music. And will perform in collaboration with Hawai'i artists at the Pipeline Café on Saturday, May 29 and again at the Nä Hökü After Party on Sunday, May 30. |

Steel Guitar: Henry K Allen
The last living Hawaiian Steel Guitarist for the world famous "Hawaii Calls" radio broadcast show. He was been recognized as "The Master Artist" of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Hawaiian music by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists. Come learn about the steel guitar form this living legend. His workshop, Sound of the Steel the Hawaiian Touch, will cover many aspects from the history, chords and scales, Hawaiian vamps, to where and how to buy an instrument. Henry will have a PowerPoint presentation and demonstrate on various instruments. |

Meet the Artist: Kealoha
Kealoha was born and raised in Honolulu, HI. He spent most of his childhood as a closet nerd, hiding his academic interests by spending most of his time on soccer, basketball, theater, break dancing, surfing, and hula dancing. Although he was enrolled in honors Math, Science, and English classes, only a handful of people knew that he was ranked 9th in the nation in the National Math League, and that he got a perfect 800 in his math SAT’s. Therefore, it came as a surprise to his peers when he announced that he would attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the top school in the nation for science and engineering. Armed with a BS from MIT, come hear the story of how one day in San Francisco the course of his life would drastically change. |

Roland National Rep, John Hernandez will share the many aspects of the Roland Electronic V-Drum System and the Electronic Percussion. John has been a professional musician since 1976 and was in the fore front of electronic music since 1977 both as a programmer and performer. Some of the artists he has worked with: Journey, Yes, Peter Gabriel and Abraxes. He was and is a pioneer in the application of electronic percussion. John has performed on two of Neal Schons solo albums. |

Slack Key: Kawika Kahiapo
Kawika's interest in music began at an early age, the legendary Gabby Pahinui was the inspiration for his passion for kï-hö'alu (slack-key guitar). Today, he continues to perpetuate the art in his records and annually at the Slack Key Festivals. In 2007 he was awarded the Kï Hö'alu Award at the Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards. Kawika contributed his musical talent on some 30 recording projects and has collaborated or performed with major Hawai'i artists Na Leo, Kelly Boy Delima, Del Beazley, the Native Hawaiian Band, and others. He released two solo albums (Alana and One Heart One Voice), and in 2007 his song 'Life in These Islands' won Song of the Year. He is a sought after studio musician whose kï hö'alu graces many theme songs and jingles on radio and TV. Kawika sits on the Boards of Kokua Hawai'i Foundation Board and Friends of He'eia State Park. His workshop will be cover scales and tabulation in taro patch "G" tuning, in Wahine "C" tuning, and in releative cycle positions (C,F,Am, G,Dm or D,G,Bm,A, Em etc.) Take home charts will be provided. |

Electric Contemporary Bass: Nathan Aweau
Nathan Aweau hails from a musical family, and has played a variety of instruments including guitar, 'ukulele, percussion and saxophone before settling on the electric bass. He is currently one half of the awardwinning group Hapa. In 2006 Hapa swept the Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards with their album Maui. That same year Nathan won the Jazz Album of the Year with Bass Etude, and the Male Vocalist of the Year with Classic Series Vintage. He has won the Male Vocalist three times (E Apo Mai 2003, and Hawaii Classic Series Hula 2007), and is a sixtime Hökü winner as a solo artist. Slack Key: Cyril Pahinui
Cyril Pahinui is one of Hawai'i's our most gifted guitarists and most recognized singers who has performed Carnegie Hall twice, contributed to three Grammy Award winning albums received numerous Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards and recorded on more than 30 Hawaiian musical releases. He performs regularly in Waikïkï, tours, produces several annual festivals, and teaches classes and workshops throughout the world. This year was honored with the Hawai'i Music Awards, Life Time Achievement Award. The workshop sessions are taught in the kanikapila style, Nana ka maka; ho'olohe ka pepeiao watch with the eyes, and listen with the ears. Thus one learns. Students of all levels will be guided through simple exercises and solos to create the 'slack key' sound. He will focus on tunings that originated in the Pahinui family. In addition, the use of vibrato, harmonics, slurs, harmonies in thirds and sixths, legato playing and other musical ideas will be discussed. This fingerpicking style will add new sounds and flavors to your entire repertoire. Chord charts and song sheets will be supplied, students should bring their own guitars. |

Hōkū Zuttermeister Hōkū Zuttermeister was born and raised in Kāne‘ohe, Hawai‘i, to parents Carl and Susan Zuttermeister. He attended Windward schools – from Benjamin Parker Elementary to King Intermediate and Castle High. Hōkū has 3 siblings: sisters Tiffany and Hone, and brother Makana. At a very young age, Hōkū started dancing hula, and in intermediate school, progressed to teaching himself how to play the ‘ukulele, guitar and bass. |
